General Facts
* Every 14.6 minutes someone dies from suicide. Though suicide attempts are not reported, it is estimated that close to 1,000,000 people make a suicide attempt each year.
*Suicide is the 4th leading cause of death for adults between the ages of 18-65 years in the United States
*In 2008, there were 36,035 reported suicide deaths in the United States. Suicide is the 10th leading cause of death in our country.
*Every day, approximately 99 Americans will take their own life
* 90% People who die by Suicide have a diagnosable psychiatric disorder at the time of their death
*There are an estimated 8-25 attempted suicides for every suicide death

Firearms,Alcohol Suicides and etc...
*96% of Alcoholics who die by suicide continue their substance abuse up to the end of their lives
*Alcoholism is a factor in 30% of all completed suicides
*Approximately 7% of those with alcohol dependence will die by suicide
*Although most gun owner reportedly keep a firearm in their home for “protection” or “self defense,” 83% of gun related deaths in these homes a re the result of a suicide, often by someone other than the gun owner.
*Firearms are used in more suicides than homicides
*Death by firearms is the fastest growing method of suicide

*Hanging or Suffocation is used in about 1 out of 5 suicides. People who die by hanging have used virtually every coceivable thing to hang themselves with, including show laces, electrical cords, belts, bedsheets, etc.
*Poisoning accounts for slightly less that 1 out of 5 suicides.
 
                   Youth and Young Adult Statistics
*On Average, a young person (age 15-24) dies by suicide every 2 hours and 12 minutes
*Suicide is the second leading cause of death in College Students
*Suicide is the sixth leading cause of death in 5-14 year olds
*Note
the relatively low suicide rate in 5-14 range is .7% per 100,000 population, but keep in mind that very young children can, and sometimes do, die by suicide.
* Suicide is the third leading cause of death among 15-24 (1 being accidents 2 being Homicide)
Teen Suicide
The Teen Suicide Rate has dropped 25% since the early 1990s, according to the American Psychiatric Association. While this decline in teen suicide is encouraging, suicide statistics amongst teens remains very high. The APA reported that suicide is the third-leading cause of death in the young adults aged 15-24

Homosexual teens have higher than normal suicide rates, due to social rejection by peer (and sometimes family), bullying and social isolation. Exposure to People who commit suicide-either personal exposure or through the media-also increases the risk of suicide, a condition referred to as the “contagion effect”
Signs of Suicidal Behavior in Teens

Difficulty functioning at home, work, school and in social settings
*Feeling overwhelming guilt, shame or hopelessness
*Feeling Trapped or abandoned
*Giving away or throwing out possessions
*Sudden change in personality or appearance
*
Sudden Change after depression (Possible sign that the teen has decided on a suicidal act)
*Thinking and talking consistently about death or a desire to be dead
*Thinking or behaving abnormally or signs or psychosis
*Threatening suicide both directly and indirectly
